An Ocean Wise Success Story
Over the years, Ocean Wise has made incredible progress in advancing sustainable seafood by recognizing responsible fisheries, supporting small-scale fishers, and helping consumers make informed choices. One of our standout success stories is the transformation of B.C. spot prawns.
In the search for a sustainable alternative to farmed Asian tiger prawns, Ocean Wise helped turn spot prawns from a largely exported product into a celebrated local treasure. By working closely with chefs, fishers, and businesses, harvest rates have decreased by 32 percent thanks to improved sustainability and management measures, while the value of the fishery has increased by 72 percent. A meaningful win for both sustainability and local economies.
